From outside all they see
behind the rain-smeared grimy glass
is the buzzing neon messenger
its blurry blue-stained signature
splashing in the puddles of their path.
Inside, the air is moist and close
warm as a mother’s love.
The blood-flow of the bass line rolls
in twelve-bar walking wonder
above the heartbeat thunder
of the drums.
In a minor key, the saxophone is
riding on the groove.
This blues …
that shines a light into the darkness
proves the body has a soul
planted the seed of boogie woogie
gave birth to rock n roll
